WORKSHOP CANCELLED: Poverty Part I: Understanding Children from Generational Poverty
Description
As our student population living in poverty grows so rapidly, many teachers are seeking ways to better serve this population. This class helps educators and other service providers understand what living in generational poverty means. Because poverty often puts our children in a survival mode - you get up in the morning and don’t know what you’ll have on a daily basis - there are specific hidden rules that need to be followed to survive. Many of these hidden rules are very contrary to those that are followed in middle classs, thus in school and work. The result can be a lack of understanding and confrontation.
This class also looks at language and story structure and how it can affect discipline and achievement. In addition, resources (other than money) are discussed as well as family structure. Participants will be provided time to discuss and plan how this information can be implemented into the classroom and service agency. The work of Reuven Feuerstein and Ruby Payne will be examined.
This class is a prerequisite to Part II and III.
